The Man Within The Shadows

Dear Diary,
I met a strange friend today. He doesn’t have a name. He’s a man within the shadows, he hides in the darkness just watching. I was alone again today, Mama and Daddy were fighting again. I started crying when he appeared. He asked me why I was crying and when I told him about Mama and Daddy fighting, he said he would protect me. I didn’t see him but he sounds like a man so I figured he was. Well, actually, he sounds like several people speaking at once. It’s kinda weird and was hard to understand him at first but I got the hang of it.  
He told me he was lonely, so I told him that we could be friends. He said he’d like that. Isn’t that great? My first friend! We talked for hours until he said he had to leave. He’s coming back tomorrow, I can’t wait! I’ll tell you more tomorrow!

Dear Diary,
It’s been a week since I met the Man within the Shadows. I’ve been meaning to tell you more about him but I wasn’t able to move my hand for a while. Daddy got mad and sprained it. He didn’t like my new friend and said he was fake. I know he isn’t though! He stayed by my side until bed time! I asked him why I could never see him. He said I would one day understand.
I hope so. I gotta be quick with this though, he’ll be coming over soon and I want to be able to talk to him. No matter what daddy says I know he is real, he hugged me and all I saw was darkness but I felt warm and safe. Anyways, I gotta get ready! Will tell you more next time!

        Dear Diary,
Mama and Daddy had a really bad fight. I heard Mama scream so I ran downstairs to check. Daddy had a knife in his hand and Mama had red stains on her white shirt. I think I screamed but maybe it was Mama when Daddy started approaching me. I couldn’t get away and suddenly I felt an awful pain in my neck, I couldn’t speak and I felt like I was choking on something. Daddy stood over me, looking happy for once. You remember my friend? He came out of the Shadows, I couldn’t see straight but I’m sure I saw him. He took Daddy away to the kitchen and when he came back he picked me up. I don’t remember anything after, just darkness. When I woke up, he was back in the shadows. He said he had my bags ready and that we needed to leave. Mama taught me never to leave with strangers but he isn’t a stranger.
So, I left with him. Now, we’re on a bus heading somewhere. He said he’d tell me when I should get off. I don’t know when I’ll write to you again but don’t worry! I’ll be fine as long as my friend is with me!
